So it's spring and I've been doing some cleaning.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I've just thrown out a skip-load of news papers. Since the financial crash of 2006 I have been collecting copies of the Financial Times. My plan was to use them as the basis of my research for my next book an updated version of New Rules for the New World but instead of using fictional characters, to use real people and stories to illustrate how breaking the rules of our World After Midnight leads to surprising grief. And most important of all, how to avoid it in the future. That project is now cancelled, abandoned. You might ask why. Well the answer is very simple. For me Brexit was my "Bobby Ewins in the shower" moment. If you don't know what than means I've provided a link. In my youth I had dedicated countless hours to following the exciting twists and turns of the Ewing family in the soap opera Dallas. In the same way, for most of my adult life I have paid attention to the news, current affairs and done my bit as a citizen to remember things so we can hold the powerful to account and not have them fool us.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Then one day on Dallas, Bobby, who had long since been written out of the story line, re-appeared in a shower which he had been taking many many episodes before! In a flash several years of story-line were snipped out. As if time had been bent by gravity and snipped off a loop. For me Brexit has simply snipped of every single plan and goal and achievement and challenge of the past forty or so years. All norms are gone, assumptions evaporated and capabilities undermined. All of it is now completely irrelevant!

I understand why many people voted Leave. Each had their own reasons. Many valid some less so. I also understand the role of Big Data analysis in helping the Leave campaign target and campaign so effectively. I also have studied the persuasion techniques used which I must admit were first class! Perhaps even better than the persuasion techniques used in the US elections. But without an understanding of the downside you know it is impossible to do a business case. The downsides were far too complex and unknowable to make headway without really deep study. They were unknowable because of the large number of self-interested parties involved. Plus the fact as time passed in the divorce, as it does in any divorce, the balance of power would likely shift. And without an understanding of both benefits and downsides, a business case, any choice or any vote, however good the rhetoric, is simply a random act of faith.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
And there are many things I don't understand. I would never have believed that such learned people would treat an irreversible choice so lightly but somehow ALL MPs and ALL the Lords voted exactly the same way. I have never seen that in my life except at times of war. Why did they all roll on their backs allowing their tummies to be tickled? Was it fear of the three-line whip? Was it a fear of being pilloried by the media? I can't believe that with all that wisdom, our high quality politicians would have thrown in the towel so easily. And yet they have but have given us no clear idea of the future, benefits, and the downsides which we now seem to keep tripping over and discovering one after another. Customs union, Gibraltar, two major EU Agencies, Banking & Medicine to leave London taking thousands of jobs and so on. Totally baffling to me. How it is we have swapped to a regime made up of people who no more than nine months ago we referred to as "swivel-eyed loons"?

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
So I have completely stopped following UK current affairs. I see no point. It's obviously far too complex and for a simple man like me to make any sense of.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
My choices are to get behind the new regime; I have a wealth of knowledge of three things the new regime needs - I know how to get success in projects and change really, really, really well. I can accelerate innovation in any organisation by an order of magnitude and I have a deep, deep understanding of the World After Midnight, that is how to use all the levers, digital, human etc., etc., to create the outcomes you want rather than the surprises described in the FT articles I have just chucked out.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But should I? I don't want to be Hugo Boss, the talented designer of SS stylish uniforms. He encouraged people to join one of the vilest and most criminal regimes ever seen. And if the UK does fail it could easily become the new North Korea. A nuclear-armed, belligerent neighbour with bad relations propped up by the USA. Sounds far fetched? So was Brexit and I didn't see that coming. I don't want to be the person who helped it innovate in order to make the world a terrible place.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I intend to be a 'citizen of the world instead focusing my efforts on people and organisations who wish to collaborate and work together on our small blue planet. I also want to put my effort into the non-human parts of the world. I'm certain that if we took whales dying of hunger because their stomachs were full of plastic and other real phenomena as seriously as we take what is really simple to achieve, economic growth, we would have better lives and more for those intent on power to be able to bask in it all.

The last ten years of your life have been spent on social media. And since we are alike, I guess most of your time has been spent typing text and attaching videos and pictures. It's a bit like having your own mini BBC. You broadcast a little thing and then someone broadcasts back at you. You smile, feel satisfaction but not completely because you <em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 0.975em; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">never really interact as real emotional people. If you want to understand this more deeply, read my previous blog that proclaimed loudly, “I don’t want to interact with data, I want to interact with people!

I said Social Media 2.0 needed to be interactive. I compared it how I and my clients live and work on QUBE and pleaded for change. Then along came Meerkat with it's live streaming app. Hooray! Even though it only streamed one to many. Every budding Hollywood star was up on Meerkat broadcasting like crazy. But all that attention brought predators to the poor critter. In no time Periscope had pounced on the Meerkat - even though it was stood up tall on it's hind legs <span style="font-family: "source serif pro" , serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">to look as scary as possible. And then it was finally killed and stuffed by Facebook's Live. It seems social media is learning. but perhaps it's learning the wrong things. I read recently that the bulk of views on live happen <em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 0.975em; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">after the event and <em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: Georgia, "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 0.975em; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">not live.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Apparently, according to the Oxford Dictionary, the world has now entered the ‘post-truth’ era. From how it’s described it would appear to be a significant change. If you, like me, have been involved in change or projects you probably just smiled wryly at the discovery the world has only recently made but which you have known about for ages. Consider the projects whose RAG (Red-Amber-Green) reports are full-on-green right up to the point where the project crashes and burns in flames over-budget, late and without deliverables. Or the wonderful way a phase can suddenly become a month late, overnight. Or how sponsors can confidently announce delivery dates without understanding the complexities. Or how organisations new to Agile can have scrum after scrum and yet produce an un-testable final product which can’t go to the full market. Many of these come from “invisible” type projects. Change where progress is not obvious or easily measurable. Projects in this category include software coding, culture change, innovation, marketing and artistic. In these projects, asking the team, “How is it going?” elicits a one word answer, “Fine.” They may not intend to speak ‘post truths’. It’s more likely that because of the invisible nature of the project, they themselves don’t know they are off-track.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
As the world moved away from being about purely local transactions and people began to rely on ‘strangers’ to provide their food and medicine, it became a matter of life or death to know the truth behind what you were consuming and buying. As a result, branding was born and thrived. First with bits of hot metal on cattle and then in labels on bottles of medicine so you wouldn’t get taken in by fake ‘snake oil’ sales men but could be sure that you had the genuine article.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Brands have now taken on a life and value of their own. We automatically associate a range of very specific qualities with each brand which reassures us. In a complex situation, where you have little time to decide and you are unsure of the outcome, the brand works as a short-cut proxy for the truth. In fact the more uncertain and ambiguous the situation, the more likely people are to reach for brands they recognise or understand. For many enterprises the importance of their brand is significant enough for it to be reported in their financial results. Brands are also really significant for individuals. Just mentioning their names conjures up a distinctive list of adjectives which you can be certain they will embody. Think Branson, think Trump or think Madonna. You know exactly what to expect.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Apparently, according to the World Economic Forum the types of risk affecting the world are more diverse and ever more interconnected. So I'm a teenager singing my heart out loudly to the latest, coolest, pop song when my mother joins in. The shock of it. How could she possibly know the words and the tune? She can see the bafflement in my face so explains, "This tune was very popular when I was at college," she says. I'm still baffled. I'm too young to realise the industry uses remakes and cover versions to extend and maximise the returns from IP so I can't believe it. I look at her as if she must be making it up. Now she looks confused, and perhaps slightly hurt, that I don't believe her. But she was right and it was true. It's just that like most humans we assume what is <em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: georgia, "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 0.975em; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">new to us is <em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: georgia, "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 0.975em; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">new to the world. <span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "georgia" , "source serif pro" , serif; font-size: 0.975em; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Few of us have the scientific instinct to do a reference search to verify the source and avoid 'Chinese whispers'. The second event was even more galling but harder to handle. What do you do when a Pulitzer prize winning writer purloins your stuff then misrepresents it and gets the content and concept ridiculed? That's how it happened to me when a text from one of my colleagues sent me to this link. If you know anything about me and my work over the past three decades you'll recognise the curves. They are what I was asked to do a TED Global talk about. if you read the article or book you'll also realise the concept and solutions are completely misrepresented. But how do you point out the 'Fake New' of a bad cover version to the author agent and publisher without seeming petty and perhaps ending up having to sue them?

<h3 style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.85098); font-family: "source sans pro", helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 21px; line-height: 28px; margin: 2.4rem 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">
Surviving in a world of data overload where everyone want's to make a difference, be noticed and be famous regardless is not for the lazy or faint hearted.

Don't fall for cover versions - find the original. Remember the 'Fake New' often misinterprets or leaves out vital elements of what you are reading about. Consider how <em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: georgia, "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 0.975em; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Digitalisation slipped into <em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: georgia, "source serif pro", serif; font-size: 0.975em; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Digitisation. And transformation slipped into change. Ask yourself, "How likely is it that this person has a deep understanding of the issues, deep enough to really be a thought leader?" Search a bit around the concept. One "Fake New" I tripped over was a company who, having been advised by an 'Agile' Consultant, were making people sit at a different desk each day and stand up for meetings in the board room all squashed up in the corner because the board table and chairs were still present! Somewhere the principles of Agile projects got misinterpreted.

In that world, polls work, economic activity can be forecasted, prices go down in a recession, world events are not so interconnected that emergent surprises like millions of refugees suddenly arriving on your shores without warning occur. In that world investment leads to business growth and business valuation is linked to performance. Young people look for long term careers in big corporates. And the boss's KPIs make sense because they can set meaningful one year budgets and know how the market place behaves. Most people understand and recognise the rituals and tools of this world and have accumulated the requisite 10,000 hours in it to make them expert.

<span style="color: rgba(0 , 0 , 0 , 0.701961); font-family: "source serif pro" , serif; font-size: 21px;">The foreign exchange market is huge. It trades more in a day than the entire stock market trades in a year. There is money to be made in foreign exchange trading and so it attracts lots of smart people and has plenty of resources. Smart people and resources means that they should have a better shot at knowing where the world is going and not being surprised by stuff. Were you as amazed as I was last week when the dollar crashed and then rose like a phoenix to be higher than it had been before the US elections?

Being human means suffering from, 'The Shock of the Unexpected'*. Have you ever been surprised by events, to the point where you can feel that your brain has shut down and your emotions are raging? What happens is that a bit of your old 'crocodile brain' towards the base of your neck turns off the modern frontal bits. Have you heard the gibberish you speak when you are in that state?** (Just think of some of the things you have said in response to the surprise POTUS event I'll bet you are fully convinced even if there is no evidence). Of course it's gibberish, your logical brain is turned off!

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
I don't have resources, and I know about the danger of the shock of the unexpected and I do know how it can devastate your performance and get you making dumb decisions. So I created two Performance Enhancement Tools (PETs) to solve this for me. I know that once you have imagined an event, however unlikely, when it happens your brain doesn't get hijacked. in fact you will feel a bit smug and happy that what you predicted has come true! I know that today is the most probable day to precede tomorrow. And that means tomorrow will be the most likely day to follow today. So in idle moments I FutureDream and FutureMap. Dreaming solves the emotional shock. Mapping gives me an idea of what might happen next.

<div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); font-family: "Source Serif Pro", serif; font-size: 21px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 32px; margin-bottom: 3.2rem; margin-top: 3.2rem; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Today I would like you to spend half your commuting time or coffee time FutureDreamingTM. Choose something important for you, say a meeting with your favourite client. Now imagine surprise events which could affect it. Start with the good ones, such as your client has been promoted, move to negative ones which could knock you off course, then move to slightly crazy ones and then back to positive ones at each stage note your feeling about the event.

It's the millennium. A typical group of typical senior managers are agreeing on who to promote. The choice is between a manager who presents clear plans, good business cases and can demonstrate that they have experience and another who doesn't' do any of those things. Who would they promote? But, remember even then, offshoring and outsourcing, of the more easily specified parts of the organisation, meant remaining internal roles had more complexity and change to deal with.

Only it's not.

In most instances it is simply adding cost complexity and confusion to our already complex lives. Here's an example. This is a message I received.

It's obviously supposed to improve my customer experience and has been generated automatically probably via some sort of 'Internet Of Things' capability, where my parcel has informed the system of where it is!

This would be amazing but for two things.

Imagine phoning a friend to say, "Hello. You may have won the lottery today." and then hanging up! That would be pretty pointless. So, one word in the message, "attempt." The word also tells me that their system is not joined-up or predictable and repeatable.

Secondly, the message is sent from a 'no reply account' which means I can't tell them that I will not be in or suggest a better time for me. They will therefore waste time and money trying to deliver the parcel anyway, even though I could have saved them the expense of a wasted journey. I therefore know that the person who wrote the message, the one who signed it off and the one who set it up in a jumble of multiple fonts have not shifted their mindsets to our World After Midnight customer-centricity and interdependence. I also know that they have not altered their behaviour in any way, probably just doing digitally what they may once have done with a card through the door or phone call.

This type of attempt to 'do Digital Transformation', I have fondly categorised as 'Accesorising' in my model MetaMorph(TM) in my upcoming book. It misunderstands that Digital Transformation is Human Transformation enabled by digital opportunities and gets swept up by the technologies themselves or device fetishes

Unpublished studies show that many companies have seen a 8-10% increase in the costs of information and communications technology (ICT) and a significant increase in complexity, but without any positive impact on productivity. Published work by Forrester Research indicates that on average less than ~6% of organisations are gaining differentiation from their attempts at digital transformation.

Take a look at your organisation. If you see lots of new scarves, ties bangles and excitingly coloured socks beware you are not Digitally Transforming

The truth is that most of us can’t WORK from anywhere. Work is often about human to human interactions, emotions, creativity and trust building or other relationships. Stop and think about it. I write a comment to this post. You read my comment and respond. Someone else responds to your comment and I read that… We NEVER interact as humans. You and I NEVER interact as human beings as we would in a real-life space. The bulk of the market for digital communication is not about human to human interaction. ER then seeks to layer, on top of the human experience, features only digital technologies can enable such as: persistence, single points of view amongst several people search at a click, etc. To my surprise we have created what I describe (and I am biased) as a world beater...QUBE. The authors are correct in their conclusions but for the wrong reasons. Over the past four years I have transitioned my organisation from offices to working globally via ER. Relationships are better, office politics has declined and most importantly productivity has risen by about a factor of five. I hate to admit it but I can't imagine VR becoming the ‘Next Big Thing’. It is true that VR is pretty amazing. It draws you in, you lose track of time, and your mind is in a different place from your body – that immersive experience is exhilarating. But when you get a real ‘Next Big Thing’ it is because 'the big thing' gives us real Value. iPads helped you look so cool in front of your friends that you didn't care about the price tag. Value is simply the sum of all the Benefits you get minus the associated Costs, both financial and emotional (for the geeks V=B-C). VR will only take off if we get the Value right!

Even I am too old and stuffy to wear one of those 'silly', bulky VR face-headsets. How would that look in the office when the CEO puts one on and bumps into a wall because of a 'lack of vision'? To give me Value, the benefits would have to be pretty amazing. VR would work for me if it gave me something I couldn't do without VR, easily and cost-effectively. It would have to, at minimum, give me superpowers.
VR would work for me if it gave me something I couldn't do without VR, easily and cost effectively. It would have to, at minimum, give me superpowers.

Or alternatively VR would give me Value if we could reduce the Costs. For me the emotional cost is of looking silly in a 'face-headset' set. When I saw the new Star Wars movie in 3D, I was kitted out with a style-free, black version of the glasses Brains wore on Tracy Island. The film's images were more immersive than the plot. I know that VR can give you the same experience but turbocharged. But can we make the VR experience happen without the headsets? Yes we can. Do you own a sound player with stereo loudspeakers or a headset? Stereo was the big innovation which turned music into an immersive experience. Your brain is fooled into thinking you are actually surrounded by musical instruments playing. You can create an immersive experience with a screen which is big enough to capture your attention and three-dimensional sound. For me just taking away the bulky, face-headset would bring huge value.

I would be primarily interested in using VR to help my enterprise. For you as an executive or senior manager, I suspect you are interested in your goals. 21st-century business success is either about: Evolution – that means innovation, agility, collaboration and continuous learning - or Domination - gaining scale, global but seamless communications, resource utilisation and decision effectiveness. VR would only get my attention if it could help me do these things better, faster and more cost-effectively than I can traditionally.

I suspect that as powerbroker in your organisation you are also probably an 'oldie'.* (* My definition of an oldie is, "anyone who is older than Google or can remember when the internet happened".) For us oldies, Value will come if the design of the VR is aimed at us. It makes use of tech skills we already possess, it allows us to use our familiar tools like spreadsheets and powerpoints. Even giving us decent text sizes and making it not feel ‘gamey’. I would want to be able to forget about the software and concentrate on the goals. All of those would boost the Value to me.

Virtual worlds are real places where people can interact. Whether your strategy is to Evolve or Dominate, your people have challenges which will best be solved through interaction. So adding interaction to the immersiveness of VR adds more Value and gives it a better chance of becoming ‘The Next Big Thing’. I suspect many games will be built with this combination in mind. But if you remember SecondLife you will know that just interaction and immersion can lead to some very strange looking avatars and awkward situations.

...the sweet spot is the overlap between immersivity, interaction and integration.

VR can only be ‘The Next Big Thing’ if it hits the sweet spot. It must offer so much value that it is utterly compelling. It must do something which we cannot do without it. And it must do it in a way which is easier, more convenient and cheaper than we would anticipate.

I believe that the sweet spot is the overlap between immersivity, interaction and integration. Integration is when the designer has ensured that between participants, goals are shared, alignment is easy, people are enabled to collaborate or compete towards a real outcome, in a different & better way than they can do traditionally face-to-face or using pale imitations of face to face like conference calls, lync, Skype, webex, adobeconnect and other software packages.

When VR hits the sweet-spot it will be ‘better than life’. That for me would be the equivalent of VR giving me superpowers. And it would add real compelling Value. If VR hits that sweet spot Rory Cellan-Jones would have predicted correctly and it will definitely be ‘The Next Big Thing’ for 2016.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">18 months ago, NHS National Services Scotland embarked on a
change plan called QuEST. This created eight core objectives for new ways of
working, one of which was innovation. It was decided to use QUBE
to set up a steering group to see how an innovation framework could be
developed.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> There were
several reasons for using QUBE. The first is geographical spread –
people based all over Scotland
are involved, and travelling times can be extensive. Added to this there is job
spread; clinicians, operations managers, and other people who might not
normally communicate with each other frequently, if at all. And thirdly, the
NHS is under pressure to use space more economically. Office space is at a
premium and managers are encouraged to find other ways to meet. That space can
be hard to find; so QUBE offers a solution.

of the problems with meetings can be getting everyone organised to be in the
same place at the same time. "With QUBE we use ‘drumbeats’
– you set the time and place and it happens, regardless of whether everyone
shows up or not. If they don’t attend, we can update them later; all of the
work done is on the whiteboards for them to see. After eight weeks we had a
framework that built trust and quickly felt like a natural way of working. We
presented it to the executive team, who were impressed enough to give approval

it can be hard to explain QUBE unless you try it out for yourself;
and there can be resistance from people if they think it’s merely a

Dr Watchorn says,
“they quickly convert. I don’t think there’s been anyone who really hasn’t

A: By using the fourth dimension with QUBE.For nearly 30 years the University of St Thomas in Minnesota, US, has been holding The Forum on Workplace Inclusion, bringing organisations together to discuss issues of diversity and the best ways to make sure people at work feel included.

Last week the Forum faced the problem “how do you include someone who isn't there?”. Prof Eddie Obeng, the keynote speaker, was thousands of miles away at the time!

audience what they look like on QUBE.

The answer was to think in the fourth dimension by adding QUBE, Pentacle’s revolutionary 3D learning environment. Eddie connected to the audience from a qubicle (virtual classroom) on QUBE, which meant that not only were they able to see and hear him present in real time, they were also able to interact and ask him questions throughout the session.

So did the audience feel included, even though the presentation was virtual? Here are some of the reactions:
Commuting heaven? What tomorrow's urban transport systems might look like. That was the header on the BBC News page yesterday.
Commuting?

Yesterday during an NHS NSS review 'qall' on QUBE (http://QUBE.cc) Kerry Russell said, "Isn't it about time we began to think of a world post meetings" "A world where we do things differently much better, learn new things, get the work done and make decisions?" "This is what I liked about working on QUBE."

About a fifth of the energy we use is used for transport - mostly to move people from homes (with computers connected to the internet) to and from offices or schools (with computers connected to the internet) or to and from meetings.

Any serious plan to re-balance the world that doesn't involve a radical rethink about moving electrons instead of people isn't really serious.

About a fifth of the average worker's time is spent in meetings of which a quarter of that time is completely wasted, according to Management Today. Harvard Business Review warns us that for senior management, it's more like four-fifths spent in meetings and that doesn't even take into account the time spent getting there and back! McKinsey's warn about the wasted time. But worrying about time is not enough. In our fast-changing, complex world, without new learning, how good is the quality of any decisions taken in these meetings? How good is the perspective of any plans made in these meetings?

Any serious plan to build a world-beating 21st-century business or organisation that doesn't involve a radical re-think about how to integrate continuous, collaborative learning and working into the core of the enterprise instead of individuals working independently and meeting up periodically to share 'past sell-by-date' thoughts isn't really serious.

Innovation is nothing less than:

“The process of Turning (new) Ideas into Money (or social benefits).”

1- Innovation is change – so the Laws of Change** apply. But because it is (new) change, engagement must be more than logical – it must be emotional and/or cultural

2- The Sparq of an idea goes on a journey to end up as Money (Social Benefits) – as on any journey The Speed of Innovation and time taken is Determined by the Bottlenecks not the number of ideas which set off!. In a complex system there are rarely ever more than half a dozen bottlenecks.

3- For every extra idea squeezed through the bottleneck you will have an extra innovation – so increase the throughput through the bottlenecks. All time and resources spent on nonbottlenecks will have no impact at all on the level of innovation achieved. Its’ not how big the funnel is it’s the size, organisation and use of the orifice!

4- Sparqs which originate outside the organisation, Pull Sparqs are at risk inside the organisation – Sparqs which originate inside the organisation, Push Sparqs are at risk outside the organisation. The closer to the end recipient the Sparq originates the more likely it will be accepted.

5- Because innovations change the world they enter, success is not just the impact of doing something. Success is the sum of the effect of doing something AND downsides of doing nothing! This means that conventional business cases and value calculations are irrelevant

The latest iteration of QUBE, the world's most engaging collaborative learning and business transformation social medium, was released earlier this month. Version 3 improves almost every aspect of QUBE, which means more learning, easier to use, faster, fully integrating learning and doing real work and completely eliminating the difference between ‘being online’ and ‘being there’.

To celebrate the release and give people an opportunity to try out the new version, Pentacle threw a launch party. Of course, the party took place entirely on QUBE, so that people around the world could join without having to leave their own desk. The New World Café was decorated specially, and there was a virtually unlimited supply of virtual champagne.

Throughout the day veteran and new QUBE users dropped by to meet the Pentacle team, including professionals from AkzoNobel, Amey, Atkins, BAE Systems, Birmingham Community NHS Trust, Duke Corporate Education, Gower Publishing, Grant Thornton, Lexmark, Telefónica, Thomson Reuters, Vink, Vizeum and Wolters Kluwer, among others.

Many of the Pentacle tutors were on hand to demonstrate how working on QUBE increases engagement and makes collaborating with geographically-dispersed colleagues easy. Dr David Lomas spoke about some of the new features available in Version 3, and Prof Eddie Obeng outlined his vision for the future of executive and management education. Guests who had previously attended courses on QUBE shared their experience of how working virtually had enhanced performance in their organisations, and there were also video showings on the lawn screen, such as Eddie’s TEDGlobal talk.
By the end of the launch party, it was determined (using the handy Carbon Calculator built into QUBE) that a total of 42,479 miles of travel had been saved by everyone meeting on QUBE instead of physically. This means that all the participants would have had to drive for 21 hours (or fly for 6 hours) each, and 103 trees would have had to be planted to offset the carbon emissions!

If you weren’t able to attend the launch party, don’t worry. If you gather together a couple of your colleagues, you can have a “guided tour” with one of the Pentacle tutors, who will run a short workshop for you on a useful topic.

If you know me , you'll know I like quirky, non-mainstream tech. At home I still have a "Pick up, tap, tap, tap and shout 'Operator' several times!" phone and a Bakelite phone (both still work!).

In the late 1980s I decided to "splash the cash" and buy a cordless phone. I'd seen it for sale in Tottenham Court Road in London but the stimulus, as always, was when I described it to a friend. They laughed at me impulsively and asked why on earth anyone would need a cordless phone? As a rule I use derisory laughter at ideas I propose as a sure-fire acid test of innovative change. So I bought it, took it home and installed it.

I waited patiently for someone to call me so I could experience the freedom of walking to the hall, answering, and walking back to the room I'd been in and continuing what I was doing rather than as usual, being forced to sit chained (or corded if you prefer) to the phone in a freezing hall!.

I waited. Then it rang. Joy! It was my mum. I picked up the phone, sat down and fifteen minutes later was shivering as I hung up. Yes. I had done what I had always done picked up the cordless handset and sat down next to the base on the bench we always sat on to make calls.

When the moment for innovation came, I simply forgot my opportunity to do something different. My automatically learned actions kicked in. I didn't even consider not sitting down - it never came up into my conscious decision-making brain! It took a pile of books on the seat and about a month of conscious hard work to create the habit of picking up and walking away. (Developing the habit to put the handset back was far easier - I didn't have to unlearn anything.)

Despite my best efforts my habit subverted my conscious desire to innovate.

I was reminded of that story today when I came across a number of long email exchanges between several Pentacle tutors who've just joined the network. Just like me, they had let habit overcome innovation. As Pentacle tutors they now have access to QUBE the most powerful collaborative-social medium in the world - they could easily have resolved the discussion on QUBE with a meeting as qubot avatars or by working asynchronously or by leaving videos or snapshots to explain the details but instead they had resorted to multiple emails!

Despite our best efforts our habits sometimes subvert our conscious desire to innovate.

Who do the world's top legal, healthcare, tax and accounting specialists turn to when they need advice and information themselves? Wolters Kluwer.
Over the past 176 years Wolters Kluwer have innovated to provide the most relevant information in the most effective and efficient way.

Pentacle were delighted when Wolters Kluwer asked to use QUBE to develop and facilitate a crucial global project being delivered internally. 25 executives and senior managers from the regions e.g. EMEA, Americas etc., across the world learnt the supporting Pentacle's World After Midnight (WAM) concepts and tools and applied them to deliver an excellent solution. The solution required deep buy-in not only from the participants but also from their stakeholders. The project which normally would have taken several months was delivered without a single flight, in less than a month with human engagement and putting in place some new & deep relationships!.

Now, that project on QUBE has been short-listed as a finalist for the prestigious Global Innovation awards!

Wish us luck!
He achieved this using Pentacle's collaborative learning platform, QUBE.

The innovative design included a pre-summit session run entirely on QUBE where everyone attended as qubots. This was followed by a contribution to a major summit for Healthcare professionals and finished off with a post summit event again on QUBE.

In terms of quality and cost the learning experience was exemplary and at a fraction of the cost of travelling to Australia or a video conference the session was a winner all round.

Professor Eddie Obeng told the participants on the other side of the world that "It's not about what I know, its about what you learn!" and then took the audience on an engaging roller coaster of a journey. The highlight of the session was that he shared his "Why children are becoming obese.' 'BubbleDiagramTM' with the audience.

The Chairperson summed up the session saying, "That was such an innovative session that the conference organisers should really be thanked for organising something so interesting and so involving!"

In his latest blogpost, Professor Eddie Obeng issues a challenge to all social media sites: "Let's make Social Media really Social". Eddie seems to think that there is a big mistake with early 21st-century social media.

He writes of his love for 'swooshing and swiping' his screens, hearing in his head the god-like
voice of Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard, commanding the
device to “Make it so”. And it happens! Bigger, smaller, up, down. But then he complains that all the swooshing and swiping isn't natural or human, but is
fun and extremely rewarding.

He describes how we love
broadcasting to the world and updating our timelines, describing how "somewhere inside my head I feel like a celebrity, imagining all the adoring fans who are following my every word, every tweet. (In reality it's just one or two friends who I bug until they respond.) And it sort of happens! Diagnostics tell us the hits, people tell us their likes (and dislikes). It’s not interaction, it’s not banter, it’s not a real emotional and creative discourse, but it is fun and rewarding."

Eddie then gives us an insight into the strategy for the development of QUBE, the world's first collaborative-learning social medium for executives and managers. He says: "When we began developing QUBE, I was adamant about many things. Mostly that it replicated as much as possible the grown-up business environment with the Trojan horse of learning disguised at its core, so that we could achieve the vision of learning without boundaries. I had in mind a Lloyds-style coffee house atmosphere (important to be able to breakout and have sub-conversations) mixed with a Leonardo da Vinci-style artist's studio, with younger artists learning and applying the skills they needed, showing their sketches to each other, sharing their experiments with each other and surpassing their teacher." He claims that "This is human, this is interactive, it’s banter, emotional and creative, and it’s fun and rewarding."

Having begun to make his case against social media, Eddie invites us to watch his Google Zeitgeist talk, where he describes how 21st-century people have stuck to 19th-century habits of commuting, so that people leave a home well-equipped with the latest computer, super-fast broadband and 21st-century tech to travel to an office with a slow, locked-down 20th-century computer connected to the internet through a piece of wet string! He calls commuters ‘Time Travellers’, as they travel back and forward covering a distance of 200 years in an hour!

Eddie then insists that by sticking to our old habits we have no chance of creating real demand for what he calls Social Media 2.0. He states that "As long as we continue to pursue the 19th-century habit of moving atoms (our bodies) instead of electrons, we will have lots of boring, low-quality time on trains, in queues and in cars. This boring time we will fill using our mobile devices to interact with data. Why? Because although it’s a lower grade experience than interacting with people, it’s better than getting bored. And it avoids the potential awkwardness of social interaction or interrupting what a friend is doing (nothing, they are just composing a text to you!). So we broadcast asynchronously. And we read, and we watch cat videos selectively. It’s not interactive, it’s not banter, it's not emotional and creative, but it is fun and rewarding."

Finally, he suggests that the real challenge for Facebook, Twitter and other social media is their business model. By operating a business model where the asynchronous, non- verbal, typed-up data generated by users is the key source of revenue, they are trapped in the mode of intermediaries, keeping us apart and out of touch so that they can collect and track the data we provide.

He ends by saying: "I hope that Facebook 2.0, Twitter 2.0 and other early 21st-century social media platforms will begin to go the same way as QUBE, finding ways to allow people to interact over and above the data-driven activities. ... I do hope they will try to reinvent themselves. Because I for one don’t want to interact with data, I want to interact with people."

If you wish to comment on the original article, please follow the link here
